Hundreds of beer matts handed out to support growing local Sudbury charity

Hundreds of beer matts are to be placed in pubs around a market town in support of a campaign to support people with emotional and mental health issues.

The unique beer matts have been designed by the Sudbury based Just Talk Campaign and were officially launched this week at the town’s Prince of Wales pub. The pub is officially supporting the campaign and has already raised hundreds of pound towards the initiative.

The Just Talk Campaign, which recently received official registered charitable status, offers support to people needing help with emotional and mental health issues. It was launched by leading psychotherapist Glenda Roberts and counsellor Sharon Kendall in 2016 following a number of suicides in the Sudbury area.

Ms Roberts, said: “We thought the beer matts were a really good idea to help us reach out to more people. They have a really quirky design with the slogan ‘cheers to good mental health’ and with the campaigns contact details on them.

“We launched the beer matts at the Prince of Wales and we thank them for their continued support. We will now start handing out the beer matts to other establishments in the town. This is another way of us letting people know help is available to anyone who may be suffering with emotional problems.”

The Just Talk Campaign holds free monthly drop-in sessions where people can discuss any problem they may have in confidence with trained experienced counsellors without needing to book an appointment. The campaign also offers affordable one-to-one counselling services with a trainee counsellor who is on placement with the charity. This has already helped many local people, some who were suicidal, to cope with their problems.

Meanwhile, the Prince of Wales pub has been praised for its support for the campaign by South Suffolk MP James Cartlidge. The pub recently raised hundreds of pound for the campaign at recent casino night. It has also launched a six-month campaign where it is donating 5p for every drink sold during every live televised sporting events.

In the letter to the pub Mr Cartlidge said: “Your admirable efforts have not gone unnoticed and your support for the people of South Suffolk is much appreciated.”

Prince of Wales landlord, Duncan Tuhey, said: “We are great believers in just Talk Campaign and we are proud they chose us as the venue from which to launch the beer matt initiative. We are also pleased to receive the letter from the MP, as it is nice to see our efforts are being recognised.”
